During the early years of our country, a terrible fire devastated the mansion belonging to a prominent family in Virginia. One of the Virginia delegates at the fledgling Congress proposed that the government send money to rebuild the mansion, as the patriarch had supported the revolution.
Another member of the Congressional meeting suggested to that member it was an admirable thing to do. If he was so committed to helping the family, he should use his own funds to do so, not tax money from people who did not know the family.
Unfortunately, this wise member of Congress’s suggestion has been lost in the ensuing years.
